Investing in a professional makeup artist on your wedding day
Investing in a professional makeup artist on your wedding day
Your wedding day is the most perfect, beautiful day of your life. Of course, your makeup should parallel. No ordinary beauty routine will suffice.
If you were ever to take advantage of a makeup artist, this is your time to shine! The DIY bride should be praised; but leaving your makeup to the pros will be a decision you never regret. As stated in the title, it’s an investment!
Wedding makeup differs drastically from your usual makeup routine. Here’s a few reasons to leave your bridal makeover to an expert:
You need long-lasting makeup
Typically wedding prep begins at 7am and wedding receptions end around 10:30… not including a potential after-party(s) out on the town. Considering the length of the day, it’s not easy task to keep a fresh look the whole day. Primers, lip-stays, setting sprays… just a few things professional makeup artists use to keep your makeup in place, from first-look through the bouquet toss. A little airbrush also helps ensure your look remains, despite countless kisses and cuddles from your new husband.
Shine prevention
In the past I’ve written about Flashback and other #makeupfails here on the blog; about how the wrong moisturizer and/or highlighters can cause severe “shiny” when paired with a camera flash. Shiny and pale are not pretty wedding-day looks. You’re the star of this show, and the paparazzi will be going WILD! Don’t set yourself up to look like a ghost in every Instagram post. Don’t fret, I’ve got you covered! 😉
Add-on techniques:
You’ve heard about “stage makeup” for a performance. The same way that you want your officiant to be extra-loud so people can hear him in the back row, is the same reason you aim for bigger and brighter makeup than you’re used to… To accentuate your features and avoid looking washed out in the spotlight. False eyelashes, hair extensions, bold lip liner… may seem a bit much when going out on Friday night, but appropriate for your big day!
Stress-free day:
You can’t underestimate the value of having a relaxing morning on your wedding day. You have a long, exhausting day ahead. Having a mimosa and getting pampered with your best friends is part of the experience! #treatyoself 🥂
I recently attended a wedding where the bride planned the entire day by herself. For the big day, however, she handed off the reigns to the “day-of” planner, put her feet up, and simply enjoyed the event. The mental break you will receive having someone else assist in getting ready… hair, makeup, etc., helps you prepare, relax and rest so you can soak every single moment.
… So you’ve decided to go ahead and book a makeup artist!
Here are a few things to consider before booking:
The Basics:
- Experience/Portfolio: Obviously you want to make sure they share the same style!
- Reviews: Be sure they’re recommended by other brides!
- Cost
Additional Things to Consider:
Flexibility: If you need to add another bridesmaid at the last minute, can he/she handle that? Sometimes wedding prep runs behind; make sure they don’t have a conflict later in the day… just a few scenarios!
Trial run: It’s vital to schedule a trial run with your makeup artist. You want to be very clear on your expectations to ensure you’re both on the same page, ahead of time. A great tip is to send sample photos of hair/makeup so the artist she can get a visual.
Personality: Remember this person is spending a special day with your family and needs to fit in! Make sure you feel comfortable with them.
Professionalism: To add-on to the previous bullet point: your makeup artist should remain a professional and conduct themselves in a respectful manner. This, of course, extends to the photographer and other vendors.
Hiring a makeup artist is a luxury that will allow you to enjoy your wedding day to the fullest. Choosing the right artist is simple; value someone with great experience, reviews and professionalism!
